Ingredients
Tuna Salad
- 2 (6 ounce) cans white tuna (in water, drained and flaked)
- ⅓ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
- 1 stalk celery (finely chopped)
- 1 green onion (finely chopped)
- 3 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Sandwich Assembly
- 8 slices bread
- ¼ cup butter (softened)
- 8 slices white cheddar cheese
- 1 large tomato (sliced, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F to ensure it reaches the right temperature while preparing the ingredients.
- Make the Tuna Salad: In a medium bowl, combine the drained and flaked tuna, mayonnaise, freshly squeezed lemon juice, finely chopped celery, green onion, chopped fresh parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture has a creamy consistency.
- Butter the Bread: Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Arrange four slices on a baking sheet with the buttered side facing down to prepare for assembly.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Evenly distribute the tuna salad over the four unbuttered sides of bread on the baking sheet. Layer two slices of white cheddar cheese on top of the tuna salad, then add tomato slices if using. Finish by placing the remaining four slices of bread on top, buttered side up.
- Bake the Tuna Melts: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and slightly bubbly. Remove carefully and serve warm.
Notes
- For a crispier sandwich, you can broil the tuna melts in the last 1-2 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.
- Use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor in the tuna salad.
- Substitute whole wheat or multigrain bread for a healthier option.
- Feel free to add additional seasonings like paprika or garlic powder to the tuna salad for more flavor.
- The tomato slices are optional but add a fresh and juicy element to the sandwich.
