Description

Delicious Sticky Honey Soy Chicken baked to perfection with a sweet and savory glaze, featuring tender bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs or drumsticks coated in a sticky honey soy sauce, baked alongside aromatic red onions and garlic. This dish is easy to prepare and perfect for a comforting family meal served with rice and steamed greens.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1.2kg / 2.4lb bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs OR drumsticks (5 - 6 pieces)
  • 1 red onion, peeled and cut into wedges
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Glaze

  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or ordinary white vinegar)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

To Garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Fresh coriander/cilantro leaves (or green onion, parsley, chives)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) or 180°C for fan-forced ovens to prepare for baking the chicken.
  2. Prepare Baking Dish: Line a baking dish with foil and then with baking paper. Make sure the dish allows the chicken pieces to fit comfortably without being too spaced apart or too snug to ensure the glaze cooks properly.
  3. Make the Glaze: In a bowl, mix honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and black pepper together to create a flavorful sticky glaze.
  4. Arrange Chicken and Pour Glaze: Place the red onion wedges and chicken pieces skin-side down in the baking dish. Pour the prepared glaze evenly over the chicken and onions.
  5. Bake the Chicken: Bake the chicken for 25 minutes, then turn the pieces over and bake for an additional 25 to 35 minutes until the chicken is browned and the glaze is sticky and syrupy. If the glaze is not thick enough, remove the chicken from the dish and return the baking dish to the oven for a few minutes to reduce the glaze.
  6. Coat Chicken with Glaze: Turn the chicken pieces again and spoon the thickened glaze over to coat them well before serving.
  7. Serve: Serve the sticky honey soy chicken hot with steamed rice and greens. Sprinkle sesame seeds and fresh coriander or your choice of herbs over the top for garnish.

Notes

  • Use bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs or drumsticks to retain moisture and add flavor.
  • Adjust vinegar type to your preference; apple cider vinegar adds a mild tang.
  • Be mindful of spacing the chicken in the baking dish for proper glaze texture.
  • Check glaze thickness at the end of baking and reduce if necessary to get a sticky coating.
  • Serve immediately after baking for the best flavor and texture.
