This recipe combines crushed Andes Mints, semi-sweet chocolate, and buttery goodness with crispy Rice Chex cereal, coated in powdered sugar and enriched with mint-flavored cookies and candies. Perfect for holiday treats or anytime you want a sweet, minty snack.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 Cup Andes Mints (roughly chopped)
- 1 Cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 Tablespoon salted butter
- 7 Cups Rice Chex cereal
- 2 Cups powdered sugar
Optional Mix-ins
- Mint-flavored cookies (chopped, quantity to taste)
- Andes mint candies (or mint-flavored baking chunks, quantity to taste)
- Green M&Ms (quantity to taste)
Instructions
- Add Ingredients to Bowl: Place the chopped Andes Mints, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and salted butter in a large, microwave-safe bowl.
- Microwave Chocolate Mixture: Heat on high in the microwave for 30 seconds and then stir well. If any unmelted chocolate remains, continue heating in 10 to 15 second increments and stirring until smooth and fully melted. Avoid overheating to prevent burning.
- Coat Cereal with Chocolate: Add the Rice Chex cereal to the melted chocolate mixture and gently fold it until all the cereal pieces are evenly coated.
- Add Powdered Sugar: Sprinkle half of the powdered sugar over the coated cereal, then shake or stir the bowl to distribute it. Add the remaining powdered sugar and repeat the mixing process.
- Combine Cereal and Sugar: Seal the bowl with a lid or cover tightly with aluminum foil and shake vigorously to achieve a uniform coating of powdered sugar on the cereal. Break up any clumps gently and shake again if necessary.
- Set the Puppy Chow: Spread the coated cereal mixture out on a large sheet of aluminum foil or parchment paper to allow it to set completely.
- Serve and Add Mix-ins: When ready to serve, transfer the puppy chow to a large serving bowl and fold in any optional mix-ins such as chopped mint-flavored cookies, Andes mint candies, or green M&Ms to add extra flavor and texture.
Notes
- Make sure to microwave the chocolate mixture carefully to avoid overheating and burning the chocolate.
- Use a large enough bowl to allow space for shaking and mixing without spilling.
- Letting the puppy chow set on parchment or foil helps it harden properly for easier handling.
- Optional mix-ins can be customized based on your preferences for added crunch or mint flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week for best freshness.
