Description

These Layered Jalapeño Cheddar Biscuits with Salted Honey Butter are a flavorful twist on classic biscuits, featuring sharp cheddar cheese and spicy jalapeños layered with creamy cream cheese and finished with a luscious salted honey butter. Perfect as a savory breakfast treat or a tasty side for any meal.

Ingredients

Biscuits

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1-2 jalapeños, seeded if desired, and chopped
  • 2 sticks (16 tablespoons) cold salted butter, cubed, plus melted butter for brushing
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk
  • 4 ounces cold cream cheese, sliced into 3 slices

Salted Honey Butter

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • Flaky sea salt, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the biscuits.
  2. Prepare Dough: In a food processor, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, kosher salt, and cubed cold salted butter. Pulse until the mixture forms pea-sized clumps. Add shredded sharp cheddar cheese and chopped jalapeños, pulsing 1-2 times to combine. Drizzle in cold buttermilk gradually until the dough looks shaggy but may still be slightly dry.
  3. Shape and Layer Dough: Turn the dough out onto a clean surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick square. Cut the square into 4 equal pieces. Place one slice of cream cheese on 3 of the pieces, gently pressing to flatten. Stack these three cream cheese-topped pieces on top of each other and then add the remaining piece without cream cheese on top. Press down to flatten the stack evenly.
  4. Roll and Cut Biscuits: Dust the surface with flour and roll the stacked dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Cut this rectangle into 12 individual biscuits. Place the biscuits on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 10-15 minutes to chill them, which helps maintain their shape during baking.
  5. Brush and Bake: Remove the biscuits from the freezer and brush the tops with melted butter to promote browning and flavor. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown on top.
  6. Prepare Honey Butter: While the biscuits bake, combine softened salted butter, honey, and a pinch of flaky sea salt in a small bowl. Mix well to create a smooth salted honey butter.
  7. Serve: Serve the warm biscuits with a generous spread of the salted honey butter and an extra sprinkle of flaky sea salt for a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and spicy flavors.

Notes

  • For less heat, remove all jalapeño seeds before chopping.
  • Freezing the biscuits before baking helps them hold their shape and creates flaky layers.
  • You can substitute sharp cheddar with your preferred cheese, such as pepper jack or smoked gouda.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, use 1 cup milk mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar, let sit 5 minutes.
  • Use room temperature butter for the honey butter to make mixing easier.
